I’m quite proud of this one–it feels to me like the magical alignment of all kinds of bits and bobs in my psyche. I’m noodling on my next Max Herkimer story.
My methods included talking to strangers, whether human, bird, tree, or other. Observing the swirl of dirt in the wind. Searching the historical record for unusual events. Watching neighborhood cats at work. But the primary tool of a psychogeographer was and always would be the dérive: a walk with no destination beyond knowledge of the place itself. (I subscribed to the Situationist dérive. Earlier versions involved a lot of opium.)
It’s a story about listening, about imagining, about community repair, about the small mysteries right in front of our eyes. It’s set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and it’s about that, too.
